A first psychiatric evaluation is a 40-minute conversation with a psychiatric provider. They ask about your symptoms, history, and daily life, then recommend a treatment plan. Most visits happen by video, from a private place you choose.
Booking the appointment is often the hardest part. If you have already decided it is time to see a psychiatrist, this is what happens next at Conscientia Health.
Before your appointment
Book and choose your state. Select your state and pick a time. Conscientia Health offers virtual visits where its providers are licensed, and in-person visits in New Jersey and New York. You can request a male or female provider when you book. For same-day availability, call 1 (877) 803-5342.
Complete your intake form before the visit is confirmed. It covers your details, insurance, and health history, so the appointment can stay focused on the conversation. If it is not finished, have your insurance card and photo ID ready.
For a virtual visit, use a private, quiet space. Charge your device, test the camera and microphone, and log in 5 to 10 minutes early.
During your evaluation
Your provider wants the full picture. Expect questions about why you are here, how long it has been happening, and how it affects work, sleep, or relationships. They will also ask about past diagnoses, therapy, and medication. A first visit does not require a past diagnosis.
They will ask about physical health, because some conditions and medications affect mood and focus. If you also see the primary care team, those providers can coordinate. Family history matters too. Depression, bipolar disorder, and ADHD can run in families.
Daily habits are part of the visit: sleep, appetite, alcohol, caffeine, and stress. Every patient is also asked about thoughts of self-harm. This is routine, and an honest answer helps the provider support you.
Be specific. “I have missed two deadlines this month” tells your provider more than “I feel off.”
At the end of the visit
Your provider will share their initial impression and a treatment plan. That plan may include medication, therapy, or both. Next steps may include a follow-up, lab work, ADHD testing, or a primary care visit.
You may get medication at the first visit if it is a good fit. Other times the provider needs more information first. You can ask about benefits, side effects, and alternatives before you decide.
After your evaluation
Follow-up visits are about 20 minutes. They check how you are feeling and whether treatment needs adjusting. Many patients do better when psychiatric care is paired with therapy.
Mental and physical health affect each other. Poor sleep, low energy, or a chronic condition can change how you feel. The primary care team can work alongside your psychiatric provider.
Before the visit, write down your symptoms. Be honest, even when it is uncomfortable. Ask questions if something is unclear.
Booking for a teen
The R.I.S.E. Teen Mental Health Program supports teens ages 12 to 19 with psychiatry, therapy, and primary care in one plan. A parent or guardian usually joins part of the evaluation. With consent on file, the team keeps families involved while respecting the teen’s privacy.
R.I.S.E. offers virtual and in-person visits, including at the Wellness Room at Red Bank Catholic. Call 1 (877) 803-5342 and select option 4 for R.I.S.E.
